Beautiful Universe’s Approach

These are the five questions that keep college students up at night—the five tensions that make them think they have to choose between science and faith. The five flashpoints where atheist professors, YouTube creators, and biology textbooks say: “You can believe in God, or you can accept science—but not both.”

Beautiful Universe disagrees.

Question 1: The Big Bang or Genesis?

Science says: The universe began 13.8 billion years ago in a massive expansion from a singularity.

Scripture says: "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth" (Genesis 1:1).

Students are told: The Big Bang disproves Genesis. You have to pick one.

What if the Big Bang doesn't contradict Genesis—but confirms it?

  • For most of the 19th and 20th centuries, many scientists believed the universe was eternal-that it had no beginning.

  • The Bible was alone in claiming the universe had a starting point.

  • Based on Einstein’s theories of relativity, Georges Lemaître (a Catholic priest and physicist) proposed the Big Bang in 1927. However, atheist scientists resisted it—because it sounded too much like creation.

  • Einstein initially rejected the Big Bang, preferring an eternal universe.

Bottom line: The Big Bang points to a beginning of this universe. A beginning requires a beginner that is beyond (transcendent to) this universe. That is entirely consistent with the nature of the God of the Bible. Are you willing to follow where the evidence leads?

Question 2: Is the universe finely-tuned or a cosmic accident?

The universe is fine-tuned to astonishing precision. If constants were off by even 1 in 101, the universe couldn't support life.

Skeptics say: This is just luck. Or maybe there are infinite parallel universes.

Students are told: Fine-tuning is coincidence. Claiming it proves God is unscientific.

The numbers are staggering:

  • If gravity were stronger by 1 in 1040, stars would burn too fast for life

  • If the electromagnetic force were different by 1 in 1040, chemistry wouldn't work

  • If the cosmological constant were off by 1 in 10120, the universe would have collapsed

To put 1 in 10120 in perspective: Imagine covering the entire United States with dimes stacked to the moon. Paint one dime red. Blindfold someone and ask them to pick it on the first try. That's only 1 in 1029.

Bottom line: When you see precision that defies probability, design is the rational conclusion.


Question 3: Can life be made in a test tube?

 Science says: Life emerged from non-life through natural chemical processes about 3.8 billion years ago.

Skeptics say: Given enough time, chemistry inevitably produces biology. No designer needed.

Students are told: The Miller-Urey experiment proved life can arise naturally.

Even the simplest living cell requires:

  • A minimum of 250-400 genes

  • Integrated protein machinery

  • A functioning genetic code (DNA → RNA → Protein)

  • A membrane, energy systems, replication mechanisms

The probability problem: The odds of a single functional protein forming by chance is 1 in 101⁶⁴.

DNA contains coded information—instructions. In every case we observe, information comes from intelligence. We never observe information arising from chance.

Bottom line: The origin of life remains one of science's greatest unsolved mysteries—mysteries. Seventy+ years after the Miller-Urey experiment we know that its conditions did not resemble primitive Earth—making this experiment historically interesting, but irrelevant to this planet’s origin of life. Well-funded scientists in pristine labs have been able to synthesize many (not all) of life’s prebiotic building blocks. Research in this field should continue. To date, brick walls are abundant rather than a putative path for self-organization of initial life. Life requires an abundance of information, and information requires an intelligent informer.

Question 4: Does Darwin explain everything?

Science says: All life descended from a common ancestor through mutation and natural selection.

Skeptics say: Evolution explains everything. Invoking design is "God of the gaps."

Students are told: Evolution is settled science. Questioning it makes you anti-intellectual.

Irreducible complexity: Michael Behe identified systems that require all parts present to function:

  • Bacterial flagellum: A molecular motor with 40+ protein parts. Remove any one, and it doesn't work at all.

  • Blood clotting cascade: 20+ proteins in precise sequence.

  • The human eye: Lens, retina, optic nerve, photoreceptors—all must work together.

Darwin himself wrote: "If it could be demonstrated that any complex organ existed which could not possibly have been formed by numerous, successive, slight modifications, my theory would absolutely break down." To be clear, Darwin believed his proposed mechanism could make every variation and exquisite manifestation of the living world.

Bottom line: You can accept science and still question whether Darwin's mechanism explains everything. Many credentialed scientists do. Neo-Darwinism (the modern synthesis) is being increasingly doubted by evolutionary biologists. The complexity of epigenetics is turning this field upside-down. Many scientists in this field still hold firmly to their atheistic premise. But deeper understanding through research seems to suggest a teleology—a purpose—that living cells and organisms seem to pursue.  A complex field to be sure. There are many theistic implications to this research. It will be fascinating to watch this burgeoning field unfold.  Stay tuned.

Question 5: Are humans really fearfully and wonderfully made?

Science says: Humans share 98-99% of DNA with chimpanzees. We're sophisticated primates.

Scripture says: Humans are made “in the image of God” (Genesis 1:27).

Students are told: Believing humans are “special” is arrogant and unscientific.

What Beautiful Universe Reveals

Yes, we share DNA with chimps. But that 1-2% difference is everything.

  • Humans create art, music, literature

  • Humans develop complex language with syntax and abstraction

  • Humans have the difficult-to-define capacity of consciousness. We ask “why”—we seek meaning and purpose

  • Humans do science (animals don't study physics)

  • Humans have moral awareness and wrestle with ethics

Bottom line: The image of God isn't about DNA percentages. It's about consciousness, creativity, moral awareness, and the capacity for relationship with God Himself.

The Big Five aren’t conflicts. They’re opportunities to see God’s fingerprints.
